Who We Are

In 2005, Little Dixie Community Action Agency was instrumental in bringing Smart Start Tri-County to this area to assist with its mission of, “Helping People ~ Changing Lives”. Smart Start Oklahoma is a grassroots initiative that supports families as they raise children who are safe, healthy, eager to learn and ready to succeed in school. By making local civic and business leaders, educators and volunteers aware of children’s needs and by collaborating with local service providers, Smart Start makes better use of programs or resources that already exist. There are currently 18 Smart Start communities in the state, including Smart Start Tri-County.

“Smart Start Tri-County is a vital part of our Pushmataha County Turning Point Coalition. Dennis Willeford its director acts on Coalition suggestions on bettering the lives of our youngest citizens and brings to us the latest information on children’s needs in our county. Its training for parents and care givers as well as its reading programs are much needed in our area. Dennis was recently re-elected by our Coalition for a second term as chairman. He also received state-wide recognition by being named Southern Champion for Turning Point of Oklahoma and the Fit-Kids Coalition for his work in childhood literacy,”.

“McCurtain County Coalition for Change has as one of its main goals the need to improve the lives of our children. We strive to do this by helping to keep them safe, healthy, educated and happy. Smart Start Tri-County through its Born Learning Program and Raising A Reader program among other activities has helped us in reaching for this goal. Dennis Willeford the programs director has taken an active part in the coalition by co-chairing the Youth and Families Committee. The program has had and continues to have a big impact on McCurtain County,”.

“Dennis Willeford and Smart Start Tri-County has been an excellent partner in the Choctaw County Turning Point Coalition. He has been active in all parts of coalition activities, weather it is opening a new skate park or manning the coalition booth at the county fair. Smart Start Tri-County has given away over 1000 children’s books to our children and has set as its goal to put Raising A Reader kits in every OPAT, Early Head Start, Head Start and Pre-K as well as every Child Care Center and Home in Choctaw County. Its training sessions for parents and its Smart-Flix free parenting skills video exchange program is having an impact on our county. Smart Start Tri-County is a vital partner in our coalition and I commend those who support it,”.
