RSVP
Retired Senior Volunteer Program
Channeling
the talents and energies of people age 55 and over who would like to
be of service helping others is a primary purpose of the Retired
Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
One of Little
Dixie Community Action Agency's most popular and longest running
programs, RSVP provides a way for persons 55 and over to volunteer
their time, experience, knowledge and interest in order to help
others.
Volunteers
serve as teachers' assistants, friendly visitors, drivers, hospital
auxiliary members, library workers and engage in many other
activities. They range in age from 55 to 90 and there are currently
a total of 872 volunteers serving 76 worksites in Choctaw, McCurtain
and Pushmataha Counties.
These valuable
volunteers provide more than 350,000 hours of service in a year's
time. The RSVP program is funded in part by the Corporation for
National and Community Service along with State and local donations.
It has been operating in Choctaw, Pushmataha, and McCurtain counties
since 1973.
Among the
volunteers are retired teachers, ministers, housewives, contractors
and executives, to name a few. RSVP participants can choose a
volunteer activity to suit their interests, talents and time.
There are no
restrictions based on education, income or experience. The only
qualifications are the age of 55 or over and a desire to be of
service to others.
Volunteers are
eligible for reimbursement of expenses such as transportation and
meals while volunteering. There are also many opportunities to serve
at home, such as sewing, phoning shut-ins, or assembling information
kits for various social service agencies.
Arrangements
can be made to accommodate volunteers who do not have transportation
and wish to serve. Volunteers are protected by medical indemnity and
life insurance while participating and traveling to and from RSVP
activities.
Little Dixie
has RSVP offices in Hugo, Antlers, Broken Bow and Idabel. For more
