Head Start

One of the larger programs of Little Dixie is Head Start, a program that believes a solid, developmentally appropriate pre-school education is an essential foundation to success in the classroom and in life.

Through Head Start, children are encouraged to develop in all major domains -- social, emotional, physical and cognitive. Children learn best through experiences. This program increases exposure to math, science and language arts experiences in order to enhance school readiness. Daily math/problem-solving and language experiences along with weekly science and food experiences are offered to each child. These activities give the children opportunities to extend their creative and thinking skills.

Three and four-year-old children are served in 23 classroom sites located throughout Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties. The program serves 449 children.

In addition to the educational opportunities in the classrooms, Head Start also strengthens ties between parents and children, parents and the communities, parents and staff and community partners.

In the social and emotional domains, children are provided an opportunity to mature in a warm, caring environment with teachers trained to nurture social and emotional development.

Special needs children are integrated into the regular classrooms. Provisions for children with disabilities include a full range of activities and services normally provided to Head Start children with modifications to meet the special needs.

Cognitive development is a vital part of a quality early childhood program. Head Start helps stimulate children to experiment, inquire, observe, play and explore the environment.
