Little
Dixie Community Action Agency's Early Head Start Program was
initially funded in 1998 to give low-income children ages birth to
36 months, pregnant women, and families an "Early Head Start" on
becoming successful individuals in society and to promote
self-sufficient whole families.
This program
offers a comprehensive multi- disciplinary approach to meet a
child's emotional, social, health, nutritional and psychological
needs. Services include health and nutrition screenings, social
services, educational services to children and parents, and mental
health and special education services to children with disabilities.
Little
Dixie's Early Head Start/First Start program currently serves 16
children in Pushmataha County, 12 in Choctaw County and 12 in
McCurtain County.
Studies have
shown that children of low-income families who have attended quality
programs such as Head Start and Early Head Start/First Start perform
equal to or better than their peers when they enter regular school.
In addition, there are fewer grade retentions and special
placements, thus helping children look forward to a brighter future.
Early Head
Start/First Start is a full year, full day program. Operational
hours are generally from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
